Letter from the President

We’ve all heard the stories about how a doctor becomes a patient and is changed forever. In each the physician has a revelation about how difficult and uncomfortable it is to be a healthcare consumer. I recently had a minor surgery and I got to witness first-hand what my patients experience.

Let me begin by saying all of the staff and providers I encountered  were excellent during my “episode of care” at INTEGRIS Canadian Valley Hospital. Starting with pre-registration on the phone and concluding with a follow up call from the operating room nurse the next day, I was treated with respect and dignity. It was first class. I have no complaints. I do have a new understanding of how complicated and, at times scary, this process is. Perhaps I know too much about the risk of surgery and all the things that could go wrong.

As I lay on a gurney  in the pre-op room wearing only a paper gown, I tried to imagine what my patients feel like when I pop in, tell them there is nothing to worry about and quickly exit. Luckily no one did that to me. All my questions were answered. All my needs were met. I did not feel rushed and almost everyone smiled and all were pleasant. Everything was great. My biggest fear was how would I get up to pee without showing my butt to everyone. Funny how a loss of control makes you think about simple things. It was unsettling, and I am a professional at this stuff. Imagine what your average patient goes through.

As I look back on my experience, it is clear the healing process begins early. If I had been met with eye-rolls as I adjusted my gown for modesty, snippy attitudes or demanding tones when I made an anxiety-induced stupid statement, my experience and comfort level would have been totally different. I would have never encouraged anyone to go there for a procedure or surgery based on that (hypothetical) experience.

I learned a lot about what patients experience, and this has prompted me to change some of the things I do. Several observations struck me as I participated in healthcare on the other side:

  • Curtains are not sound proof. Patients and their families can see and hear everything. We need to act like everything we say and do is being recorded.
  • Take time to answer questions, even the same questions over and over.
  • Patients need to know that you care.
  • Being a patient is not fun, but it is our job to make it as painless as possible.
  • Hospital gowns leave a lot to be desired, if little to the imagination!

Within the next two years up to 50% of our pay will be tied to patient experience scores. We must keep perspective and treat everyone as if they are one of our colleagues. You are already being graded daily by your patients. Make sure their experiences are positive, and don’t save your “A” game for special occasions. Every encounter is a big event for patients, and it’s likely the first time they have not been in control of their environment. It is no fun! We do this all day, every day –patients do not.

IT IS ABOUT THEM, NOT YOU.

Be certain that you do all you can to make each patient’s experience a good one. Do not hesitate to educate others to do better when you see things not going well. Do not tolerate poor attitudes and rudeness in patient care areas. I was very impressed by the care I received and how it made me feel. It made me proud to be part of the INTEGRIS team. Let’s always strive to make sure every patient feels that way.

INTEGRIS One Care powered by Epic: Go-live Schedule

July 11, 2016 – INTEGRIS Medical Group clinics throughout the Oklahoma City metro and in Miami and Grove will go live on EpicCare Ambulatory.

October 30, 2016 – INTEGRIS Baptist Medical Center, Lakeside Women’s Hospital, INTEGRIS Cancer Institute, and INTEGRIS Mental Health – Spencer will go live on EpicCare Inpatient. If you work in these facilities you will need to complete training to work in Epic, which will replace Cerner. Training will begin August 22, 2016. Be on the lookout for Epic training registration details.

Several INTEGRIS Health Partners events are scheduled throughout the summer. Attending one INTEGRIS Health Partners Town Hall and completing one hour of education are required to participate in 2016 shared savings. See the Events section of the INTEGRIS Health Partners website to view upcoming sessions or click on the links below for details about each:

2015 Shared Savings Update

The claims run-out for 2015 was completed as of March 31, and claims data has been evaluated by Mercer Health and Benefits, LLC., a contracted vendor. That analysis will determine if savings were achieved. INTEGRIS Health Partners management will then analyze the results, complete the shared savings plan, and present it to the INTEGRIS Health Partners Board in August for approval. Then, the plan will be audited by our internal audit partner, Protiviti, to evaluate the findings and finalize individual shared savings. INTEGRIS Health Partners will begin processing payments for distribution by August or early September.
