Generations hallwayGenerations is an inpatient behavioral health program providing diagnosis, evaluation and treatment for adults ages 65 and older. The program is comprised of individualized assessment and treatment planning, therapeutic daily activities, comprehensive discharge planning and aftercare.

INTEGRIS Health and the Generations program are both fully accredited by the Joint Commission.

Treatment Focus
Generations focuses on patients who have concerns or needs such as:

  • Physical problems that affect emotional well-being
  • Medication adjustments
  • Drug or alcohol abuse
  • Alzheimer’s and other dementia
  • Grief issues
  • Anxiety, hallucinations and delusions
  • Major depression
  • Adjustment disorders of aging.

An individualized treatment program is provided for each patient. Elements of that treatment include group, individual and family counseling. Generations also provides music therapy, arts and crafts, exercises, and occupational and physical therapy.

Patient Referral
Anyone may make a referral. Most are made by physicians, mental health professionals, members of the clergy, care centers, service agencies, friends or family members.

Assessment and Admission
The initial assessment is confidential and free. It is conducted by a behavioral health specialist and can be done on the phone or at a local health care facility.

If deemed to be a candidate, the patient will be admitted to the unit by the Generations staff psychiatrist. Wheelchair accessible transportation can be provided if needed – there is no charge for this service.

Professional Support Staff
The primary care physician may refer patients directly to the Generations program and can also choose to be a part of the treatment team. The multidisciplinary team includes a full-time psychiatrist, social workers, nurses, physical therapists and representatives of other disciplines as appropriate.

Physician Relationship
Generations is staffed by a full-time psychiatrist. Each patient is assigned a second physician (family doctor or specialist) whose role is to address any medical concerns while the patient is on the unit.

Due to the interdisciplinary nature of treatment, we ask that questions and requests about the patient’s progress and treatment be directed to the social worker or nurse.

Family Participation
Family members are considered to be an important part of the treatment process, and each patient’s social worker will schedule family conferences and discharge planning with the family and the patient. Generally, family sessions are once a week. Family support groups are available upon request.

Follow Up
Patients discharged to care centers will receive follow-up visits by a Generations representative. The nurse will review current medications under the direction of the psychiatrist, and will also assess the patient’s overall well-being. Phone consultations with the practitioner are always available.

Insurance Coverage
Medicare (parts A and B) and most major insurance companies will cover both hospital and physician charges. Standard deductibles may apply. Generations accepts Kansas, Oklahoma, Missouri and Arkansas funding. Our hospital business office will be happy to assist you with the financial arrangements.

We offer comprehensive care that addresses each individual’s specific needs. Our team of specialists includes primary care physicians, psychiatrists, social workers, RNs, LPNs, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, dietitians and therapeutic activity specialists.

Standard Guidelines

  • Patient progress reports are provided to referral sources via phone, fax or mail.
  • Family involvement occurs in discharge planning and in therapy sessions.
  • Individual and group therapies are tailored to each patient’s functioning level.
  • Outpatient follow-up is arranged prior to discharge of all patients.
  • Behavioral management plans are sent to referral sources at discharge for those with behavior problems.
  • Pre-admission assessments can be done anytime.
  • A behavioral health specialist is on-call each weekend and available for assessments and admissions.
  • Our referral assistance/placement program enables us to accommodate patients if our unit is at capacity or if the patient does not meet admission criteria.
  • Specialty referrals available: cardiology; pulmonology; urology; occupational, speech and physical therapy; podiatry; the Diabetes Center and other health-related needs.

Clinical/Nursing Care

  • 24-hour licensed nursing staff includes registered nurses on duty during all shifts.
  • Multidisciplinary treatment team includes therapy and nursing staff, psychiatrist and input from various other specialists.
  • Each patient is assigned a core team that consists of a therapist, an RN, a medical practitioner and a psychiatrist. Other health providers are also part of the treatment team.

VISITING HOURS

Monday-Friday: 1 to 2 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m.
Saturday-Sunday: 1 to 4:30 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m.

Because we value patient confidentiality, unit doors are kept locked and visitors are required to sign in. Alternate hours can be arranged as needed; check with your unit.

Phone Use and Emergency Messages
Patients may use the phone between therapy sessions until 10 p.m. Calls can be made at the nurses’ station – portable phones may be used for privacy. Assistance is available if needed. Family members can reach patients by calling Generations at 800-617-3391. If there’s an emergency message, direct the call to the patient’s nurse or social worker so that we may prepare the patient accordingly.

Clothing Quantities
Patients wear their own clothing during their stay. It’s suggested to bring enough clothing for five days and nights. We launder the clothing on the unit (laundry is done daily) or families can choose to launder at home.

Personal Items
Patients are welcome to bring personal items; however, some belongings may be kept at the nurses’ station for safety’s sake. Electric razors, radios, curling irons and hair dryers are all available for patient use, so there’s no need to bring these items. It’s also encouraged to leave jewelry and items of value at home.

All clothing and personal items are checked in and labeled at the time of admission. Please notify the nurses of these items: eye glasses, contact lenses, dentures, hearing aids and prostheses. To decrease the incidence of lost items and keep the inventory up-to-date, it’s important to alert the nursing staff about items brought in or taken out of the unit.

COMMUNITY EDUCATION

INTEGRIS Generations also offers community education. Professional in-services are offered on a wide variety of senior behavioral health topics for nursing or residential care homes, home health agencies, service providers, and civic and church groups.
