INTEGRIS CEO: Committed to serving the people of Oklahoma

By Bruce Lawrence

Many Oklahomans have recently received letters from both Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Oklahoma (BCBSOK) and INTEGRIS Health explaining that INTEGRIS may become out-of-network with BCBSOK starting Sept. 1, with our employed doctors following on Oct. 24. Unfortunately, a lot of misinformation has been distributed by BCBSOK as part of its communications. I would like to clarify the situation.

We are currently in a 60-day contract extension with Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Oklahoma (BCBSOK) for the care we provide to patients with BCBSOK employer-sponsored and Medicare Advantage health plans.

We remain committed to doing what’s best for our patients and will continue to work with BCBSOK to secure an agreement that maintains patients’ in-network access to care at INTEGRIS. Though we have not yet come to a resolution, we have made some meaningful progress. The extension provides more time for discussion and avoids disruption in patient care.

If we are not able to reach an agreement, INTEGRIS hospital facilities and ancillary service facilities will be out-of-network with BCBSOK on September 1, 2017.

We previously communicated that INTEGRIS employed doctors were also at risk for contract termination. Due to BCBSOK requiring many doctors to maintain hospital privileges at a BCBSOK in-network hospital, if an agreement is not reached before the extension concludes INTEGRIS employed doctors will become out-of-network as of October 24, 2017.

What our patients can do:

  • Call BCBSOK at 918-551-3500 and urge them to work with us to protect your in-network access to INTEGRIS Health.
  • If you have health insurance through your employer, talk to your employer about exploring other health insurance options that guarantee in-network access to our hospitals and ancillary services.

Out-of-Network Timeline

Frequently Asked Questions

INTEGRIS has entered into a 60-day extension period with BCBSOK. For now, nothing changes. BCBSOK members still have in-network access to INTEGRIS hospitals and ancillary services. If we don’t reach an agreement by Aug. 31, all of our hospitals and facilities will become out-of-network as of Sept. 1.

Yes it does. The out of state plans utilize the BCBS Blue Card program which accesses our Blue Choice PPO product.

On Sept. 1, INTEGRIS hospital facilities and ancillary services will be out-of-network if we are not able to reach an agreement. We recommend all patients contact BCBSOK for any planned services after Sept. 1 to ensure the service qualifies for continuity of care during the transition period.

If you have Medicare as primary and BCBSOK as secondary you should not be impacted, but it depends how BCBSOK processes your benefits. Please contact BCBSOK to inquire how the contract extension and possible termination impacts your specific plan.

If our contract were to terminate, there is a 90 day Transition Period for patients who are inpatient at an INTEGRIS facility or whose care is medically necessary due to conditions such as disability, pregnancy or life-threatening illness. Members in their last trimester MAY be able to deliver at our facilities during the transition period and be billed for in-network services, but we strongly recommend you contact BCBSOK to confirm the delivery will be approved as in-network at an INTEGRIS facility. Please request a continuation of care from BCBSOK.

If a transplant patient is inpatient at an INTEGRIS hospital at the time of termination, the hospital stay will be covered through discharge. The transplant doctors have a separate agreement so office visits would not be impacted at this time. However, if we cannot come to an agreement with BCBSOK before the extension concludes INTEGRIS employed doctors will become out-of-network as of October 24, 2017. Please contact BCBSOK to discuss benefits and to request a continuation of care.

Yes, we will continue to send letters to keep you informed of our progress.

To ensure we communicated with all patients we thought may be impacted, we communicated with all patients who received care at an INTEGRIS facility or from an INTEGRIS doctor and had BCBSOK insurance from January 2016 to present. If the patient had BCBSOK at any point during that time period, a letter was sent. If you would like to request removal from future mailings please contact our information line at 877-951-8804.

Patients will be billed out-of-network for doctor services and treatment in INTEGRIS hospitals or ancillary facilities. Continuity of care will apply for key conditions such as those patients currently in a hospital and some pregnancies. Please contact BCBSOK to determine if your specific case qualifies for continuity of care at in-network coverage.
