“Ultimately, the only question that matters is ‘am I happy?’” says Susan Taylor. After 27 years as the chief editor of Essence magazine and the visionary credited with building the brand, Susan L. Taylor left publishing to devote her life to building an organization that is devoted to breaking the cycle of intergenerational poverty among African Americans. Taylor is the editor of eight books, and the author of four books: the best-seller In the Spirit; Lessons in Living; Confirmation: The Spiritual Wisdom That Has Shaped Our Lives, which she co-authored with her husband, Khephra Burns; and her most recent book, All About Love.
Taylor’s genius has not gone unrecognized. She is the first and the only African American woman to be recognized by the Magazine Publishers of America with the Henry Johnson Fisher Award – the industry’s highest honor – and the first to be inducted into the American Society of Magazine Editors Hall of Fame.
She is the recipient of scores of prestigious awards, including presidential citations, Image Awards and the NAACP President’s Award for Visionary Leadership, and has honorary doctorate degrees from more than a dozen colleges and universities. Her keynote presentation helps to make the “how” of happiness and bringing balance to life simple and clear. Offering encouragement, valuable insights, and effective tools, Taylor leads attendees on a wonderful journey toward removing the walls of doubt and fear that keep many from living their best life possible.
In this inspiring keynote speech, Taylor addresses the central issues – our beliefs, behaviors, relationships, and career challenges – that are critically important to maintaining equilibrium in today’s fast-paced, hectic world. INTEGRIS Cancer Institute SurvivorFit
Join the INTEGRIS Cancer Institute and INTEGRIS PACER Fitness Center for SurvivorFit, a free eight-week strength-and-fitness program for people who have completed cancer treatment. The program is a collaborative effort dedicated to helping cancer survivors take charge of their recovery and significantly improve their health and quality of life.
Participants in SurvivorFit will experience a wide variety of exercises designed to build muscle mass and strength, increase flexibility, boost cardiovascular endurance and improve your capacity to perform daily living activities, from work to play. The program will also address the spiritual dimension of recovery through mind-body awareness, sort out the causes of stress and anxiety, help manage emotional health and enhance the recovery process, help to reduce the severity of cancer side effects, prevent unwanted weight changes and improve participant’s energy level and self-esteem.
Classes will be held from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays, in Studio 2 at INTEGRIS PACER Fitness Center, 5520 N. Independence Ave. A physician’s release to exercise is required. Register Online

Changing Your Weighs: Weight Management Program Now Offered Free of Charge
Changing Your Weighs first premiered in 1983 and has been available to INTEGRIS Health employees and the general public as one of the soundest weight control programs in the Oklahoma City area. Because our mission at INTEGRIS Health is to improve the health of the people and communities we serve, Changing Your Weighs is now offered free-of-charge to the community. As the name implies, Changing Your Weighs is a weight management program. The focus, however, is not just to change your weighs but to change your ways. Weight control is a life-long process. Changing Your Weighs is a comprehensive, eight-week, behavior modification program that focuses on weight loss as a reflection of making lifestyle changes that foster better health.
This eight-week program is taught by a registered dietitian and includes a one-on-one consult with a fitness coach. Classes meet once a week for one hour. Changing Your Weighs is designed for individuals who are at least 18 years of age. Even though the program is free, registration is absolutely required. This “gift of wellness” is made possible by INTEGRIS Community Wellness, and is open to anyone who is ready to get started and commit to making positive changes in their lifestyle.
The first session will meet one night a week on Thursdays beginning Sept. 4 through Oct. 23. Two class time sessions are offered from noon to 1 p.m. or 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. at INTEGRIS PACER Fitness Center, 5520 N. Independence Ave. Register Online

Back to Basics – Back to Beans
Beans … those magical, “musical” foods that give our bodies so many health benefits, especially for those with diabetes or heart disease or who want to lose weight. Not to mention they are nutrient dense powerhouses that are affordable and available year round! What more could you ask for? Well, just maybe, you’re not sure how to cook them. From 9 to 10:30 a.m., Pam Patty, RD, LD, will demonstrate how to cook from scratch a variety of beans (including peas and lentils) and will provide tasty samples as well! Surgical Weight Loss Seminar
Since 2006, the INTEGRIS Weight Loss Center has performed hundreds of primary surgical weight loss procedures, exceeding the national average in all weight loss categories. The center is designated as a center of excellence facility. Join Hamilton S. Le, M.D., medical director of the INTEGRIS Weight Loss Center, for a free informational seminar. All surgical weight loss procedures are carefully reviewed and explained and attendees are given the opportunity to have questions asked and answered. Better Breathers Club: Lung Disorders Support Group
Are you ready to breathe easier? If you have been diagnosed with a lung disorder such as COPD, asthma, bronchitis, emphysema or cystic fibrosis, you could benefit from the Better Breathers Club at INTEGRIS Health Edmond. Better Breathers offers you the opportunity to learn to cope with lung disorders and their symptoms while receiving the support of others who share in your struggles. Each session features educational presentations on a wide range of topics.
