URGENT: Yesterday, we sent you Dr. Raczkowski’s message in a separate email. It is worth repeating! Please read carefully and take the time to act.

Dear Colleagues,

I need your help in contacting our local state representatives about Senate Bill 1821. This Bill has passed the Oklahoma Senate and will now be heard in the Oklahoma House of Representatives. This law will require a check of the Prescription Monitoring Program (PMP) for every controlled prescription, every time, with penalties to the physician if it is not done. This applies to everything from Schedule II drugs like Oxycontin to gastrointestinal drugs like Lomotil. While we understand the importance of this legislation in trying to prevent prescription drug abuse, I don’t believe that it is fair to obligate the physician to go to the expense of adding personnel to make sure the PMP is checked on every prescription.

Some Key components of this bill:

  • Gives more punitive authority to the OBNDD by establishing a $2,000 fine for every occurrence where the PMP is not checked on the writing or refilling of a controlled substance. Physicians must provide proof that the PMP was checked in the patient's medical record.
  • Current Law HB1419 from 2013 already directs the OBNDD to monitor the PMP and notify physicians if the patient is doctor shopping. This new bill, SB1821, puts that responsibility on the physician.
  • The OBNDD has yet to fully implement this law. Implementation of last year's law will undoubtedly help crack down on prescription drug abusers; therefore, additional legislation is preemptive.
  • These excessive requirements may also have the unintended consequence of under-treating other health care problems such as sleep disorders, depression, and anxiety as this bill affects scripts for all controlled substances.

As physicians, we realize that there is a huge issue with abuse of controlled substances. We would like to work within the current laws and do everything we can to help enforce those laws. We feel that this new bill, SB1821, is overreaching and puts the responsibility of enforcement on the shoulders of the physicians.

You can contact your OK Representative at www.okhouse.gov . Phone calls are the best method of communication (you can find the directory at the website, above), but you can also send emails or letters.

Thank you for your attention to this urgent issue.

Sincerely,

Carl Raczkowski, M.D.
President, INTEGRIS Health Partners

Hyperlipidemia Update

At the February IHP Board meeting, member Gary Worcester MD, Cardiologist, presented the 2013 ACC/AHA Guideline on the Treatment of Blood Cholesterol to Reduce Atherosclerotic Cardiovascular Risk in Adults, attached. The Board accepted the recommendations.

Drabek Named Medical Director

Earlier this month INTEGRIS named Steven A. Drabek, M.D., full time medical director for INTEGRIS Baptist Medical Center Palliative Care Program, INTEGRIS Hospice of Oklahoma County and the INTEGRIS Hospice House. His two offices are located at INTEGRIS Baptist, Building A, Suite 711, and the INTEGRIS Hospice House, 13920 Quailbrook Drive.

Since 1989, Drabek has balanced his experience as a hospice and palliative care medical director in central Oklahoma with an active family medicine practice at INTEGRIS Yukon Family Clinic Westpointe. A hospice and palliative care diplomat for more than 13 years, Drabek served on numerous boards, chaired the INTEGRIS Canadian Valley Regional Hospital Medical Quality committee and served as a member of the Oklahoma Hospice and Palliative Care Association Ethics committee.

This new role is instrumental in INTEGRIS’ innovative pursuits to improve care for seriously ill, hospitalized patients. This position provides opportunities that embrace the INTEGRIS framework for excellence in providing an integrated full spectrum of services for patients and their families from the time of diagnosis, throughout advanced illness planning and end of life care. Drabek will also oversee the medical care provided at the INTEGRIS Hospice House.

“To work full time in the hospice and palliative care setting with patients and their families is a passion,” Drabek states. “In accepting this new challenge, I am very pleased to have the opportunity with INTEGRIS and look forward to working with the medical staff, patients and families across our continuum of care and services.”

  2. The system defaults to the Find a Group of Patients screen. Click the Find an Individual Patient tab.
  3. If you know the patient’s SSN, MedVentive system ID number, EMR ID#, or Health Plan ID, you can use the Quick Search feature at the top of the screen. Enter the ID in the appropriate box and click the Go Directly to Patient button.
  4. Alternatively, in the Find an Individual Patient tab, search for a patient by entering the first few letters of his or her name in the Last Name/First Name fields. P&T Committee Recommendations

The task force is recommending the following interchange: cefuroxime instead of Suprax.  This interchange is recommended for diagnoses such as sinusitis and otitis media, but not recommended for diagnosis of gonorrhea.

Committee members reviewed the information sheet for comparison of 5-ASA drugs. They recommend balsalazide for cost and effectiveness over the brand name 5-ASA drugs listed.
