Causes and Prevention

Supporting your heart with good health habits will help keep it beating normally throughout your lifetime. Here's a list of common risk factors for heart disease:

  • Smoking
  • High blood pressure
  • Being overweight
  • Diabetes
  • Physical inactivity
  • Age over 55 years old for men and over 65 years old for women
  • Family history of heart disease

Some heart disease risk factors you can't control, such as your age or the health problems of your parents. Adopting a heart-healthy diet and a healthier lifestyle can improve your health, even if you already have high blood pressure or other forms of heart disease. Things you can do to adopt a heart-healthy lifestyle:

  • Do not smoke
  • Eat a healthy, balanced diet low in salt and fat
  • Exercise regularly and lose weight if you are overweight
  • If you are diabetic, maintain careful control of your blood sugar
  • Consume no more than two alcoholic beverages a day
