The State of Education in Oklahoma: Latest National Rankings

 Nationally Certified: Oklahoma ranks 8th nationwide in the number of new National Board Certified Teachers (296) and ranks 9th in the total number of teachers who have national certification (2,599), according to the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards. About 6 percent of Oklahoma's teaching force holds the prestigious teaching credential, as compared to 3 percent nationally who do. Since 1998, legislative appropriations have funded a $5,000 bonus and application support. Nearly 60 percent of Oklahoma teachers with national certification teach in high-poverty schools.

National Model: In their sixth consecutive report, the National Institute for Early Education Research (NIEER) confirms Oklahoma as the national model for Pre-Kindergarten programs and one of only two states offering voluntary access statewide. “The State of Preschool Yearbook 2008” ranks Oklahoma No. 1 in the percentage of four-year-olds attending public school programs and as one of only 12 states meeting at least nine of ten early childhood education quality standards.<http://nieer.org/yearbook/>

High Standards: In 2006, the Thomas B. Fordham Foundation issued its first comprehensive report since 2000 on the quality of state academic standards. Oklahoma’s Priority Academic Student Skills (PASS) state curriculum ranks 10th nationally on that analysis, which included the curriculum standards adopted by all 50 states and the District of Columbia. http://www.edexcellence.net/detail/news.cfm?news_id=415

High Tech: Oklahoma ranks 12th in its composite grade on “Technology Counts 2009,” a national report by Education Week. Oklahoma received a grade of B, compared to the national average grade of C+.
