One of the strengths of the Great Plains Family Medicine Residency Program is the quality and diversity of our residents. Since the inception of the program we have filled 90% of our positions through the Match; in the last ten years we've filled 100% through the Match.

Although we generally have a strong applicant pool, we carefully examine each application. Over the years we've found that USMLE or COMLEX scores and class rank offer limited information. We learn much more about our applicants from their personal statements and letters of recommendation, as we look for life experience, evidence of good interpersonal skills, and a commitment to the ideals of family medicine. Finally, the personal interview gives us an opportunity to get a feel for the applicant as a whole person, not a collection of data.

Licensing Examinations

In order to begin residency training applicants must have passed USMLE Step 1, Step 2 CK, and Step 2 CS (COMLEX Level 1, Level 2 CE, and Level 2 PE for osteopathic applicants). We strongly recommend that applicants take these examinations early enough for results to be available by mid-February, when we submit our rank order list.

Approved Medical Schools

Applicants from medical schools on the Medical Board of California list of disapproved schools will not be considered for interviews. Please go to to view the list.
