Bilingual Patient Care by the Monolingual Practitioner

Course Description:

Bilingual Patient Care by the Monolingual Practitioner is a course geared toward rehabilitation professionals. By attending this course, participants will be equipped with a better foundation and game plan to help them work with patients who do not speak the same language as they do. The course introduces providers to evidence-based methods for assessment and intervention with this population with special focus given to working with para-professionals (interpreters). Attendees will also develop a tool box of skills and approaches for quality patient care when they do not have the support of an interpreter and when they do not speak the same language as the patient.

Course Outcomes:

1. Participants will be able to identify areas where language differences between patient and provider may affect efficacy of assessment and treatment strategies.

2. Participants will be able to describe methods for improved patient care through teaming with paraprofessionals.

3. Participants will be able to apply strategies to work more directly with patients when a language barrier exists between patient and provider.
