S-ICD® System

INTEGRIS Heart Hospital Pioneers Use of New Heart Defibrillator: S-ICD® System

INTEGRIS Heart Hospital at Baptist Medical Center is the first facility in Oklahoma City to offer the Boston Scientific S-ICD® System, the world’s first and only commercially available subcutaneous implantable defibrillator for treatment of patients at risk for SCA (sudden cardiac arrest).

During SCA, the heart suffers an abrupt loss of normal function. Most episodes are caused by the rapid and/or chaotic activity of the heart known as ventricular tachycardia or ventricular fibrillation. Recent estimates show approximately 850,000 people in the United States are at risk for SCA and need an ICD, however, remain unprotected.

The S-ICD System provides protection from SCA as traditional ICDs. However, the entirety of the S-ICD System sits just below the skin without the need for thin, insulated wires or leads to be placed into the heart itself. This leaves the heart and blood vessels untouched, providing a new solution for both physicians and patients.

S-ICD System components

  1. Pulse generator: powers the system, monitors heart activity and delivers shock if needed.
  2. Electrode: enables the device to sense cardiac rhythm and serves as a pathway for shock delivery when necessary.

Both components are implanted just under the skin (the generator at the side of the chest and the electrode beside the breastbone). S-ICD implantation is straightforward and can be done using only anatomical landmarks that remove the need for fluoroscopy (an X-ray procedure required for standard leads to be placed in the heart).

S-ICD System benefits

  1. Eliminates vascular injury potential
  2. Reduces systemic infection potential
  3. Preserves venous access
  4. Avoids potential complications associated with endovascular lead implantation or extraction

The S-ICD System is intended to provide defibrillation therapy for the treatment of life-threatening ventricular tachyarrhythmias in patients who do not have symptomatic bradycardia, incessant ventricular tachycardia, or spontaneous, frequently recurring ventricular tachycardia that is reliably terminated with anti-tachycardia pacing.

The S-ICD System is an effective option for a majority of ICD candidates.
