Transplant Dietitian

The transplant dietitian is available in the clinic to help you with your diet and any nutrition-related issues before and after your transplant.

The Hope group meets every three months for transplant recipients and their families. Our Transplant Dietitian attends the meetings and is available to answer your questions about your diet or nutrition.

Nutritional status has been shown to affect survival after transplant. Malnutrition (macro- or micronutrient depletion) before transplantation leads to impaired surgical wound healing, higher rates of post-transplant complications and rejections.

There are several key points to focus on to get yourself in the best possible state of health for transplant surgery – whether you are waiting on the transplant list or you are a potential transplant recipient. While everyone’s nutrition needs are not the same, the basic principles of healthy nutrition before and after transplant are:

  • Restrict your sodium intake (VIDEO)
  • Achieve and maintain your ideal body weight
  • Optimize and keep your blood sugar under control
  • Limit sugar and concentrated sweets
  • Improve the fat content of your diet
  • Follow balanced nutrient dense diet
  • Be aware of food safety
