The Science Behind the Vaccine

Questions About COVID-19?

An Explanation as to How the COVID-19 Vaccine Works

As vaccine distribution continues throughout the state of Oklahoma, we know many still have questions or concerns about the COVID-19 vaccine itself.

Here with a quick overview of how the vaccine works is David Chansolme, M.D., the medical director of infection prevention at INTEGRIS Health. In the video below, he gives an easy to understand scientific explanation of what happens inside the body once the vaccine is fully administered.

It is important to note that the first dose of the vaccine does not bring immunity. The vaccines currently approved by the FDA are a two dose series, meaning the second does is needed to reach the reported efficacy. But even after both doses have been administered, INTEGRIS Health warns against a false sense of security. It will still be some time before widespread vaccination will occur, so it is important to continue to practice good hand hygiene, proper mask wearing and social distancing.

To find out when the vaccine might be available for you, visit the Oklahoma State Department of Health website for the latest vaccine distribution plans.
