Thursday is the Great American Smokeout

It's time for Oklahomans to toss those cigarettes. Well, at least for one day. This Thursday, Nov. 19 is once again the American Cancer Society's annual Great American Smokeout campaign, which challenges people to quit smoking for a day. Hopefully that success leads people to see they can kick the habit for good. Need some immediate gratification? Within 20 minutes of your last cigarette, your heart rate and blood pressure drop. In one year your risk of heart disease is lowered by 50 percent. Even better, within 10 years you have lowered your risk of developing lung cancer by 50 percent. As we mentioned in a previous blog post, lung cancer kills more people than prostate, breast and colon cancer combined. The best way to avoid lung cancer is to stop smoking. So, just for one day, why not give it a shot and see how you feel? Thanks to MD Anderson for the cool infographic that shows how quickly you can benefit from quitting smoking. If you do decide to quit, the Oklahoma Tobacco Helpline has free services to help. Give them a call at 1-800- QUIT NOW, or check out their website.
