Healthy Tailgating Recipes

Posted in

It's football season here in Oklahoma. Of course, hours before a Cowboy or Sooner catches a pass or makes a tackle, enthusiastic fans clad in orange or red will come together under tents, over portable grills, and behind truck beds to yell, eat and drink -- all in support of their team -- in that classic American pastime known as tailgating.

Tailgating on football game days is a wonderful and long-standing tradition at both OU and OSU. In fact, The Daily Meal, a food and drink lifestyle website, named OSU as one of the top 25 best schools for tailgating. You might think that Buffalo wings, hot dogs and nachos are standard fare for tailgating. But if you want to make it through the day feeling on top of your game, a few healthy changes to your traditional tailgate can make a huge difference. And then all you need to worry about is the score!

Yogurt-and-Spice Grilled Chicken Skewers

Forget about corn dogs! This marinated chicken is easy to grill on site, and will be hot in no time. The low-fat yogurt makes a creamy base for paprika, chili powder, and garlic, and the reduced-fat dipping sauce contains honey mustard and light sour cream.

Healthy Seven-Layer Dip

The dairy and full-fat refried beans keep traditional seven-layer dip heavy and calorie-loaded. For a fresh take, this lightened-up recipe will satisfy but with much less fat and far more fiber.

Buffalo Cauliflower Bites and No Dairy Ranch Dip

With the same texture and flavor as chicken wings, these cauliflower bites are a fiber-filled alternative. Pair them with raw celery and this dairy-free ranch dip.

Greek Yogurt Deviled Eggs

The mayo has been swapped out for Greek yogurt to make these party favorites healthier with Dijon mustard added for a kick.
